I’m not really sure whether to post about this… It feels kind of strange, maybe you could email me some advice.
Way back in the mists of time, when L and I were going out (aside: sometimes “way back” seems about a thousand years ago, and sometimes about two days) I got her a present. A typically geeky present, but a present nonetheless. It was her own domain name (yes, you can run screaming from the room now).
At work today we were having some DNS problems with the machines in Canada, which meant I ended up typing quite a few whois and dig queries, checking on the status of domains and their hosting. So I was tip-tapping away trying to solve the problems, and I started randomly checking the status of a few of my domains too: whois poncho.org.uk etc. etc.
And I don’t know why, but I suddenly thought “I wonder if L’s domain is still registered?”. So I checked that too, and yes, it was. And then I thought “I wonder if she uses it?”. So I visited it, and found out for the first time that she has a website too. A weblog, not dissimilar to this. I wasn’t expecting to find anything there, because when I set up the domain name for her she didn’t have her own website, so I just pointed it at the site we had together (I can code, she has an eye for graphic design). That site’s since fallen off the net, so I thought the domain would be pointing into a black hole. Plus I guess I thought it would be disused, since it’s something I got for her..
So anyway, I found this site today. And now I feel really really bad. I’m not sure why, I mean, I just stumbled onto it, but somehow it makes me feel like some scary stalker ex type person, which isn’t the case at all. I mean, I was really really surprised to find it, and I’m thinking things like “would she mind that I found it?” and “would she mind that I read it?” and “should I let her know I read it???” (probably a bad idea this last one).
Erm, so anyway, that’s what’s running round in my head tonight… I know the best advice is probably “chill, don’t do anything” but it just feels really weird…
