Help Needed

Sunday, April 11th, 2004

Okay folks, I need your help. I’m in a bit of a musical rut. I’ve been listening to the same albums on repeat for ages. They are:

  • Snow Patrol - Final Straw
  • Mew - Frengers
  • Tenacious D - Tenacious D

I need some new music to listen to. I’ve preordered the new Beta Band album, but it won’t be coming for weeks. So, everyone who comes here (either intentionally or through searching for “kim cattrell naked” on google - yes, you over there looking sheepish), please post an album I really should listen to. Preferably one that will make me feel glad to be alive.

I have fairly eclectic tastes, so don’t worry about that. Other albums I’ve listened to lately include “The Complete Bill Evans on Verve”, “Complete Tchaikovsky Symphonies (1-6)”, and “Buena Vista Social Club - Next Generation”.

It doesn’t have to be a whole album either.. just one song will do. But everyone who comes here must suggest something. I’m watching the logs… I know where you live!

Kurt Cobain sitting on some steps backstage, crying

It’s ten years today since Kurt Cobain committed suicide. I can remember vividly where I was when I heard he was dead; I was in school at break-time, and someone came running in and told everyone. I was absolutely stunned. Here was someone I admired so much, so full of talent, so different. Gone.

I was listening to Radio 1 last night on the way home from London, and thought it was strange they were playing Nirvana - not really their kind of music. Now I realise why. Kudos to them.

Kurt showed other bands the way - there’d be no Oasis, no Ash, no Foo Fighters, no Linkin Park, no Blink 182 without Nirvana.

Ahead Of His Time.

The photo was taken by Ian Tilton. He had this to say about it: “Kurt had just come off stage. This was in Seattle, 1990. He simply came off stage, sat down and cried for about half a minute. Then he was fine. He had just trashed his gear on stage, and it was simply a release of energy. It is a painful picture, but it’s about the angst of performance. The band seemed used to it. He seemed very healthy then, and very happy. He was a very powerful and energetic performer, and it was all he wanted to do. The band was his vehicle, the most important thing in his life.”

Now playing: Nirvana - Lithium

Sun sets?

More woes at Sun by the looks of things. Net losses of more than $750 million and headcounts to be reduced by 3,300. Bad news.

Makes it even less likely that they’ll take the plunge and open-source their JRE, as ESR and IBM have asked for.

It makes my particular job more interesting though. Soon, we will rule ze vorld!
