100 Greatest Cartoons

Monday, February 28th, 2005

Last night, I watched The 100 Greatest Cartoons on Channel 4. Well, actually I flicked between that and Match Of The Day on the other side, but that isn’t relevant.

I was, frankly, shocked at some of the cartoons that weren’t included. Omitting Superted was pretty heinous, but no Morph?? Or Trapdoor??? Or Dogtanian And The Three Muskehounds???? At least Inspector Gadget was included, but that was scant consolation.

The worst omission by far, though, was The Mysterious Cities Of Gold.

Mysterious Cities Of Gold

This show was quite, quite brilliant. It was a cartoon which had characters with believable, rounded personalities (which was rare in those days that included the likes of He-Man And The Masters Of The Universe). It had an epic plot which progressed through its thirty-nine episodes (unlike most modern cartoons where an entire “storyline” has to be covered each show). The animation was fantastic - far better than anything else on television at the time.

And most importantly, it had a brilliantly catchy theme-tune.

I don’t know if anyone else remembers the work of genius that was Mysterious Cities Of Gold (or “MCoG” to its followers), but if you do, I’d suggest writing a stern letter to Channel 4 berating them for not including this show. I mean, ffs, if The Powerpuff Girls can get in, then surely MCoG can?

Politics of Fear

A passionate final speech from Brian Sedgemore MP.

How on earth did a Labour Government get to the point of creating what was described in the House of Lords hearing as a “gulag” at Belmarsh? I remind my hon. Friends that a gulag is a black hole into which people are forcibly directed without hope of ever getting out. Despite savage criticisms by nine Law Lords in 250 paragraphs, all of which I have read and understood, about the creation of the gulag, I have heard not one word of apology from the Prime Minister or the Home Secretary. Worse, I have heard no word of apology from those Back Benchers who voted to establish the gulag.

Have we all, individually and collectively, no shame? I suppose that once one has shown contempt for liberty by voting against it in the Lobby, it becomes easier to do it a second time and after that, a third time. Thus even Members of Parliament who claim to believe in human rights vote to destroy them.

Present And Correct

Monday, February 14th, 2005

Well, I am dragged out of semi-retirement for a cryptic post…

It’s nice to hear from you - and good to know the present is still appreciated :)

I’m also glad to hear you have graduated from the Torygraph, but I’m afraid you know I’m rubbish at cryptic crosswords…

Q: What’s orange and sounds like a parrot?

A: A carrot.

Did you tell me that one?
